For Torley Wong (aka "A Techno Kid"), there can only be such lifelong
passions he's captivated by as music (obviously), more music, and staring
at a girl in his mind's eye who's wearing a fluorescent yellow dress with
blue trim ("It reminds me of being in love," he emotes over a cup of
oversugared coffee). An awfully hyper but happy-go-lucky lad, Wong started
this composing music thing when he was 8. Back then, of course, he was big
into the classical heavies and reckoned himself to be an admirer of J.S.
Bach. Presently in the spacetime continuum and 18 years old, he's still
very much into that but recently had the nerve to cut into a very different
spectrum of the musical universe - "techno", also known as electronic
music. You could perhaps think of his work as being Chemical Bros., Fatboy
Slim, or Prodigy gone classical... perhaps!
"Aye, if you want to label my music," Wong declares, waving his hands
around like a conductor of pure energy, "I reckon you could get away with
calling it 'Orchestral Techno/Intelligent Dance Music'. Erm... it's all
about infectuous melodies marrying experimental techniques! Am I being
reckless?"
Reckless, maybe, but the third-party-proclaimed "Techno Jedi Master" (after
his new Internet hit single) is not only cautious to the point of a
friendly paranoia, but insightful as well. "I've got to keep focus, I've
got to be a dreamer but a doer as well. Living a positive lifestyle is
definitely important too, and from that stems doing your own thing and
listening to where your destiny wants you to go."
So what's Wong been up to recently? Besides being the People's Choice
winner in the 1998 Orbital Remix Competition (with his little bro,
Merritt), a YTV Achievement Awards! 1999 - Instrumental Finalist, setting a
record by snagging 25 out of the top 30 Techno songs at mPulse.com, etc...
he's been sitting back and taking things really easy. "I love my music,
like all creators of the sonic art and science should. Unloved music will
separate itself from its creator, just like a man and a woman will divorce
when they don't love each other anymore. So it's love, as mushy as that may
sound, and I'm in love with what I create. But I still need a [human]
girlfriend... thank God for relationships!"
And somewhat speaking of relationships, if you like any of the following
artists, you'll very likely be into what sounds Torley Wong has to show
you: Aphex Twin, J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy, Goldie, Jewel, Robert Miles,
Moby, Mu-Ziq, Mike Oldfield, Orbital, Prodigy, Ryuichi Sakamoto,
Squarepusher, Vangelis, William Orbit, and Yanni.
